Frequently Asked Questions about Design Thinking

What is design thinking and how does the method work?

Design thinking is a user-centered innovation method that solves complex problems through empathy, creativity and iterative prototyping. The process consists of six phases: understand, observe, define point of view, ideate, prototype and test. Cross-functional teams put user needs at the center of every decision.

What are the phases of the design thinking process?

The design thinking process comprises six phases: 1) Understand — grasp the problem and context. 2) Observe — interview and shadow users. 3) Synthesize — distill insights and define the point of view. 4) Ideate — generate as many solution ideas as possible. 5) Prototype — make the best ideas tangible quickly. 6) Test — validate prototypes with real users. The process is iterative, meaning teams move between phases as new insights emerge.

How does a design thinking workshop work?

A typical design thinking workshop runs one to five days and follows the double diamond model: first diverge (collect many ideas), then converge (select the best). Core elements include user interviews, persona development, how-might-we questions, brainstorming, rapid prototyping and user tests. Experienced facilitators moderate the entire process and ensure actionable results.

How much does a design thinking workshop or project cost?

Costs depend on format and duration. A one-day workshop ranges from EUR 3,

000 to 8,000. A five-day design sprint costs EUR 15,

000 to 30,000. Multi-week design thinking projects with implementation range from EUR 30,

000 to 100,000. Training internal design thinking coaches starts from EUR 5,

000 per person.

Which organizations and industries benefit from design thinking?

Design thinking suits organizations of all sizes and industries — from large enterprises and financial institutions to mid-sized companies. The method is especially valuable for complex, ill-defined problems where traditional analytical approaches fall short. Typical application areas include product innovation, service design, process optimization, strategy development and digital transformation.

What is the difference between design thinking and a design sprint?

A design sprint is a compressed form of design thinking lasting five days, developed by Google Ventures. Design thinking is more flexible in timeframe and allows deeper user research. Design sprints follow a stricter daily plan: Day

1 understand, Day

2 sketch, Day

3 decide, Day

4 prototype, Day

5 test. Both methods complement each other in practice.

How do you embed design thinking sustainably in an organization?

Sustainable embedding follows a step-by-step approach: first build awareness through keynotes, then run initial workshops in pilot projects. Next train internal design thinking champions, provide suitable spaces and materials, integrate the method into existing innovation processes and anchor it as part of the corporate culture.
