VS-NfD stands for Verschlusssachen
A VS-NfD training course covers the fundamentals of the Classified Information Instruction (VSA), the four classification levels (VS-NfD, VS-Vertraulich, Geheim, Streng Geheim), correct classification and marking of classified documents, secure storage and transmission, rules for electronic communication, and reporting obligations for security incidents. At ADVISORI, we supplement the theory with practical case studies and scenarios from the daily work of security-cleared organisations.
The Classified Information Instruction requires regular briefings. In practice, it is recommended to repeat VS-NfD training at least annually or whenever significant changes are made to the VSA. New employees must be trained and formally obligated before their first access to classified information. ADVISORI offers both initial briefings and refresher courses that reflect the current legal framework.
Security classification (Geheimschutz) is the overarching term for all measures to protect classified information. VS-NfD (Restricted/For Official Use Only) is the lowest of four classification levels. While the security classification framework encompasses the entire set of regulations including the Classified Information Instruction, the Security Clearance Act (SUEG) and organisational measures, VS-NfD refers to the specific classification of individual documents and information. Our training covers both the general security principles and the specific VS-NfD requirements.
The security officer (Geheimschutzbeauftragter) is the central contact for all classified information matters within an organisation. They oversee compliance with the Classified Information Instruction, manage the classified document registry, organise training and liaise with the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK). Security officers require advanced training beyond the basic course, covering topics such as classified document administration, security vetting and communication with authorities. ADVISORI offers specially tailored advanced courses for security officers.
Security vetting under the Security Clearance Act (SUEG) is a prerequisite for access to classified information from the VS-Vertraulich (Confidential) level upwards. For VS-NfD, personal security vetting is generally not required, but documented training and a formal obligation are mandatory. The three levels of security vetting (UE1, UE2, UE3) correspond to the classification levels. Our training clarifies the distinctions and explains which measures are necessary for each classification level.
ADVISORI first analyses existing workflows and identifies all touchpoints with classified information. Based on this analysis, we develop a tailored training concept that integrates VS-NfD requirements into existing processes rather than building parallel structures. This includes integration into onboarding processes, connection to existing document management systems and alignment with IT security policies. This way, classified information handling becomes part of regular daily operations.
ADVISORI offers classroom training, online training and blended learning formats. Classroom training is particularly suitable for initial briefings and advanced courses. Online formats such as webinars and e-learning modules enable flexible delivery, for example for refresher courses or distributed locations. All formats include knowledge assessments and certificates of participation that serve as proof of training in accordance with the Classified Information Instruction.
In the event of a security incident involving classified information, such as loss, unauthorised disclosure or improper handling of VS-NfD material, immediate reporting obligations apply. The security officer must document the incident and report it to the responsible authority. Our training teaches the correct response to security incidents, reporting channels and measures to limit damage. Employees learn to recognise incidents and respond appropriately.
VS-NfD training is relevant for all security-cleared organisations that handle contracts involving access to classified information. This particularly includes defence industry companies, IT service providers with government contracts, consulting firms in the public sector and suppliers in security-relevant areas. Organisations receiving a security-relevant contract for the first time and applying for security clearance from the BMWK also need training to prepare their employees.
